A quintessentially rural canal, the 33 mile long Grantham traverses three shire counties

Harlaxton Wharf Official Opening

Glorious weather was the icing on the cake on Sunday 4th July 2010 for the official opening of Harlaxton Wharf. The restored wharf represents a most welcome leisure facility for the local community and a tremendous asset for all users of the Grantham Canal.

The restoration of the wharf was made possible by a grant from the Community Spaces Programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund and from WREN.

From left to right in the picture below are Peter Hawkins - Chairman of the Harlaxton Wharf Community Group, Mike Stone - Chairman of the Grantham Canal Society, Mike Kennedy of WREN and Tony Wilkinson - Chairman of the Grantham Canal Partnership who declared the wharf formally open

In the following photograph, John Brydon, Vice Chairman of the GCS, arrives in his steam-powered boat 'Otter', assisted by Ian Wakefield on the stern of the Society's work boat, 'Centuri'.

The Grantham Canal Society's trip boat, 'The Three Shires' was a popular attraction, providing trips on the canal throughout the day.

Members of the Canal Society manned the display explaining our achievements and future plans. The barbecue staff were kept very busy feeding the many visitors.

A great time was had by all. A big "Thank You" to all those who made it possible.
