May 17th 2006 Volunteers from the Grantham Marriott Hotel, part of Marriott International Group USA, have given up their own time to clean up a section of the Grantham Canal, near the hotel and towards Earlesfield Bridge.
The initiative resulted from the Marriott International policy of promoting business practices to serve the community. Wednesday 17th May was designated as ‘Spirit to Serve the Community Day', by the Group throughout the world.
General Manager Neil Shears and his Associates decided to ‘do their bit’, and put back something into the community with offering to help restore the Grantham Canal by trimming trees, clearing litter, and removing items thrown into the Canal. As Neil Shears commented, “There is beautiful countryside right on our doorstep, which should be preserved for the people of Grantham”.
Hedges, Trees, and towpath were trimmed and tidied, and many abandoned items were pulled out of the canal – chairs, tables, bikes and several trolleys. The section has had a complete makeover. The volunteers were remembered by their colleagues back in the hotel when Craig French, the head chef, in full regalia, together with Sarah Cox, brought a tray of refreshments, non alcoholic, to the tow path, for the volunteers.
The project was organised with help from Steve Frisby , Amenities Manager , South Kesteven District Council. Peter Stone, Grantham Canal Partnership, and members of the Grantham Canal Restoration Soc. The Canal Societies were particularly pleased that more of the canal had been regenerated, and were very encouraged by the interest and help shown by Grantham Marriott Hotel, in the environment restoration work.
