Trent Hauling Bridge is so called because, in the days of horse-drawn boats, vessels would have to be hauled by capstan into the canal from the fast flowing waters of the River Trent. Also, at that time a cable was slung across the river to enable unpowered boats to cross the river from the Nottingham Canal.
